SceneTap is using facial detection software, which gathers 12 data points off an image, as opposed to facial recognition software, which grabs 36 data points, according to Nieman.
The data contains information related to facial characteristics and compares that to a data base of generic faces belonging to a wide range of anonymous people and looks for the closest match, he said.

Friday debut of SF bar-cams stirs sour reception
With a new service called SceneTap set to put video cameras in bars, privacy advocates warn that a red line's about to get crossed.
by Elinor Mills May 17, 2012 9:29 AM PDT
news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-57435903-83/friday-debut-of-sf-...
When San Francisco watering hole The Boardroom signed up last year to capture video at the bar and stream it live to the Web, manager Casey Gray liked the idea as a way to promote new business and remotely check in on what was going on.
So much for the best laid assumptions.
"At the time we didn't have any security cameras here, so it provided a service to me. I could hop on the phone and see what the bar was doing," Gray said in a phone interview from The Boardroom, which straddles the city's North Beach and Telegraph Hill neighborhoods. "I had 24-hour access, but the video might only show to the public for a few hours a day" on the Web. The service he was using was called BarSpace.
But after customers complained -- including several male patrons who expressed concern that their girlfriends could check up on their activities via the video stream -- The Boardroom turned off the camera after only a few months of operation.
"We stopped it because it was creepy and people didn't like it," Gray said. "There was push back from a lot of different people."
In what must feel like a deja vu moment, Gray is letting another startup put video cameras in another bar called Tope, which he owns. Only this time there won't be any streaming video of embarrassing or relationship-destroying bar room shenanigans.
Call it a sign of the times. Tope is one of about 20 bars launching a service called SceneTap in San Francisco on Friday. This may just be the start. SceneTap could conceivably prove useful for a variety of retail companies, providing data on when customers shop in stores, what items they browse, and other in-store behaviors and patterns. But it also raises expected hackles of privacy watchdogs who worry the data could be combined with a person's online footprint to do what even Google can't do right now -- match your Internet activities with your offline world. (Oh wait, they could do that by using SceneTap in Google Street View cars!)
-----I left my personal data in San Francisco
SceneTap's devices, located near the front entrance, keep track of the number of people who enter and exit a venue and use facial detection software on video feeds to figure out what gender and age customers appear to be. It provides that traffic and demographic information to bar owners who can design marketing and other promotions to target specific audiences, while users of the SceneTap app can see which bars in their area are "hopping."
That seems to be a far cry from sending live video to the Internet like the BarSpace service did, yet SceneTap has hit a a nerve in San Francisco, touching off a frenzy of criticism on blogs and social media sites.
"The people here care about our bars and clubs, we care about each other, and we take our privacy seriously around here," writes Violet Blue, a blogger at CNET sister site ZDNet. "We also know a lot about tech, so a startup that rolls in to carpetbag an invasive app space into clubbing is -- in most ways -- doomed to fail. There isn't much SceneTap could have done to smooth over the idea of putting cameras into bars -- in this city, anyway."
Managers of several bars in Chicago and Madison, Wis., where SceneTap has already launched, told CNET that they had not received any privacy complaints regarding the video cameras' presence in the bars. The service is also operating in Austin, Athens, Ga., Bloomington, Ind., and Gainesville, Fla., according to the company's Web site.
If SceneTap is getting this much heat before its San Francisco launch, how did BarSpace fare? Its domain is up for sale and the app is nowhere to be found.
BarSpace co-founder Michael Deignan told CNET that he and the other founders moved on to other ventures and shut down the service earlier this year. It had launched in 2009. "Up until we turned it off we had great traffic and a lot of customers," he said. "It made more sense to go over to a new company while it is hot and get it started. It's a resource issue."
Asked if there had been privacy complaints or lawsuits filed over the streaming video, Deignan said:
"There were no lawsuits and no complaints. If there were, it's nothing I heard about."
In fact, the startup got a spike in business following reports in The East Bay Express and the San Francisco Weekly last July that BarSpace was streaming from nearly 50 bars, he said. "It wasn't anything like the shit storm SceneTap is dealing with."
Even though live video is perceived as more invasive, BarSpace's video was taken of the whole room and not close up, and it was grainy with faces were blurred out, according to Deignan. Whereas, SceneTap appears to be doing data mining, he said, adding "Have you seen 'Minority Report?'"

Andrew Nieman, director of business development at SceneTap, assured CNET that SceneTap is neither a reincarnation of BarSpace, nor a scene out of a scary sci-fi movie.
"We are not a check-in aggregator. We don't show you what people are doing there. It's a snapshot of data. It's like getting a text message from a friend" who is in a bar describing the scene, he said. "We don't record anything. We don't want to have the liability of having anything recorded and it would be expensive to store all the feeds in the cloud...Our system offers a lot more anonymity."
Just because SceneTap isn't doing more advanced facial recognition, which is used to identify specific faces, and doesn't store the data or stream it live now, does not mean it doesn't have the ability to add those capabilities or won't at some time in the future. Did anyone ever think Google circa 1999 would be so much more than just a search engine?
"I don't see us needing to go to that level or wanting to," Nieman said. When pressed later for additional comment on criticisms that the company's spectre could evolve, he provided this statement: "SceneTap has no intention to use any type of facial recognition technology. If facial recognition, not to be confused with facial detection, becomes mainstream in the future and widely used commercially across an array of industries, we will assess the situation at that point."
-----Smile for the camera
A big privacy concern with facial recognition is that it will be matched up with data in the cloud and thus identify you, and in many cases out you, depending on where you are or what you're doing.
"Even if they are warned, it's a bar. People's expectations of privacy in a place like that are" high, said Sarah Downey, online privacy analyst at online privacy firm Abine.
Many bars have security cameras installed, and no one seems to mind those. But, so far, their use has been as a deterrent or to rewind for crime investigations. "This is not security," said Downey, who created a rundown on facial recognition technology. "This is people watching."

In the rush to create innovative mobile apps and services, developers are failing to adequately understand the difference between activities and spaces that are public versus those that appear to be public but are considered private in context, said Jules Polonetsky, director of The Future of Privacy Forum. "We expect to be able to be obscure in public. We get that we are in a crowd, but we still don't believe that everyone of us is such a celebrity that whenever we step out of the house it's fair game for the app developer to use the data," he said. "Folks are trying to figure out what the lines are and it's not clear. That's why we see app developers pushing the envelope and causing a backlash."
The brouhaha over the privacy implications with SceneTap is causing at least one San Francisco bar owner to reconsider the decision to use the service.
"I'm almost about to yank the whole thing," said Colin O'Malley, owner of John Colins in the city's South of Market district. "I didn't think it was that big of a deal."
His plan has been to give it a shot for the three-month free trial and see if he's really getting enough valuable information about customer demographics. But not if customers complain.
"If it's too invasive for people, hey, I'm a man of the people and we'll yank it out," he said. "If it starts to affect my business, it's not worth it."

New app tracks male-to-female ratio at bars and clubs using “facial detection”

Heading out for a night on the town? Chicago based startup SceneTap is looking to streamline the process of finding the perfect hotspot. Using “facial detection” software SceneTap tracks which bars and clubs have the most patrons and — more importantly — which have a favourable male-to-female ratio. Launching this month, SceneTap’s iOS and Android apps will provide users with real-time snapshot of what the demographics are at participating locations on any given night.
SceneTap will initially cover 50 bars in popular neighborhoods of Chicago, each of which will have a system installed with the ability to detect the number of patrons, their gender, age and more. This is accomplished using software which can detect human faces in video; many point-and-shoot digital cameras use similar algorithms in order to focus properly. Faces are then compared against a database in an attempt to determine the sex and age of the subject; are you a 25-year-old female? All of this valuable data is then combined and further analyzed to provide information such as the male-to-female ratio, the average age of patrons, who’s buying drinks and which bartender they prefer.
“This is going to change the way the bar industry runs” -Cole Harper, CEO, SceneTap
Even though it’s arriving hot on the heels of Facebook’s implementation of facial recognition, there’s a major difference between Facebook’s and SceneTap’s technology — SceneTap is anonymous. According to the company, there is no attempt to identify individuals (an activity known as “facial recognition”), but rather to discern gender, age and location within the establishment. These types of algorithms are referred to as “facial detection”, a subtle difference — but an important one. The distinction between these two terms revolves around identity; everything else about an individual is fair game as far as SceneTap is concerned.
For users the app is free; the company plans to make the bulk of its money via advertising and Groupon-like coupons. SceneTap will launch in Chicago in the middle of July and have partners in select cities across the U.S. shortly thereafter including New York, Boston, Miami, Austin, Columbus, Phoenix, St. Louis, San Diego and Las Vegas.
Slippery slopes and privacy concerns aside, I have to agree with the CEO — this is going to change the way the bar industry runs. The data this type of system could provide is unheard of in the industry. Aside from what’s already been mentioned, the potential is staggering — how many patrons left during a specific song? Or right after a particular promotion expired? How many patrons are dancing versus lounging? Are opposite sexes mingling? Are same sexes mingling? From an owner’s perspective adding a system like this seems like a no-brainer. For patrons there’s a new dilemma, do you head to the place where SceneTap says there’s a great gal-to-guy (or guy-to-gal) ratio or the opposite because everyone else is listening to SceneTap?
Do you think this use of facial detection will be beneficial or harmful to the public?

The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here.
---Name: SceneTap
---Quick Pitch: SceneTap tells you how crowded a bar is and what its gender ratio is in real time.
---Genius Idea: Relying on cameras instead of a checkin service to collect anonymous real-time data about a bar.
.

..........................................
.
.
Whether you’re looking for a bar where conversation is possible or the loudest, most crowded bar in the city, it’s hard to tell where to find it. SceneTap wants to simplify this process by incorporating a live count of how many people are in a bar, the range of their ages, and their gender ratio into an iPhone app.
Instead of relying on a checkin service that might give clues as to how crowded a bar is, what SceneTap CEO Cole Harper has in mind is an accurate tally of patrons — whether or not they use a particular service. He says about 50 bars have already agreed to install cameras at their doors that can identify the gender and approximate age of patrons as they enter.
When the cameras go live sometime next month, SceneTap users will be able to get a glimpse of what the current scene at those bars is like based on that data. They’ll also be able to chat with the bar and other SceneTap users (i.e. “Are there any tables available?”), see specials and purchase Groupon-like deals using the apps.
Harper hopes bars will pay to participate in exchange for detailed analytic information about their customer bases and a social, location-based marketing tool.
.
.............................................
img code photo ... Male Female ... Customers Entered
7.mshcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/SceneTap_1.jpg
.............................................
.
.
But there are two obvious and somewhat opposing risks in opting in: that the technology will creep people out and that it won’t be accurate enough to attract consumers.
“It’s less intrusive than scanning IDs,” Harper says about the former concern. “No personal data is obtained and nothing is recorded.”
The technology only notes a person’s gender and approximate age, he says. Some display advertising already uses a similar technology to record impressions, and you could argue that more data is collected about you during a Google search.
In order to understand what kind of person is entering a bar, SceneTap’s technology matches a person’s image with a database of faces to determine relative age. If the person matches a photo of someone in the database who is 27, for instance, that’s the age the camera will assign him or her.
To what degree of accuracy this method can label people — is a 23-year-old’s face shape much different than a 37-year-old’s face shape? — is something we’ll be able to test when the service actually goes live. For now, it’s just an interesting idea to consider as you start planning your Friday night.
Would you find a service like this useful for making plans? Are you bothered by the idea of a camera tallying your anonymous entrance to a bar? Let us know in the comments below.

When ITV launched on 22 September 1955, the BBC's television service had been running unchallenged for almost two decades and was fast gaining popularity.
Less than fifteen months before the first television commercial appeared on British screens, on July 4th 1954, the Minister of Fuel and Power, Geoffrey Lloyd, burned a large replica of a ration book at an open meeting in his constituency to herald the official end of fourteen years of rationing in Britain. The dawning of a new age of prosperity was upon the British public. From a retailers point of view the start of commercial television could not have been better timed.
At 8pm, on September 22, 1955, ITV broadcast its first television programme. Its first advertisement came 12 minutes later advertising Gibbs SR Toothpaste. That first programme is now almost completely forgotten. But the first advertisement has acquired iconic status.

The USA's first television advertisement was broadcast July 1, 1941. The watchmaker Bulova paid for a placement on New York station WNBT before a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. The 10-second spot displayed a picture of a clock superimposed on a map of the United States, accompanied by the voice-over "America runs on Bulova time."

* Greg Dyke was hired as editor-in-chief of TV-am in May 1983, when the new show was engaged in a frantic battle with BBC Breakfast and had just 800,000 viewers.
* City analysts reckon ITV's first unsuccessful foray into digital , OnDigital, had losses of up to £1m a day. Even rebranding it as ITV Digital, with a campaign featuring a woolly monkey, couldn't save it from going bust in 2002.
* In the first Pop Idol final, which pitted Will Young against Gareth Gates, on 9 Feburary 2002, the public cast 8.7 million votes and BT said the volume of calls had threatened the network.
* Bryan Ferry has admitted to being a fan of Footballers' Wives. He said the show was: "Wonderful! All these trashy women wandering around done up to the nines. I love it."
* The final of the first series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here inspired some to recreate their own jungles. B&Q reported a 30 per cent rise in online sales of deck chairs, barbecues and garden arches.
* Nearly 13 milion viewers tuned in to watch Ken and Deidre Barlow get remarried on Coronation Street in April 2005; 7 million saw Charles wed Camilla the following day.
* Royal Mail is releasing stamps to mark the 50th birthday, but Kevin Whately's image has had to be cut from the Inspector Morse stamp, as no one living, apart from the Royal Family, is allowed to appear on UK stamps.
* Nearly 90% of people watching timeshifted shows fast-forward the ads, but TV remains the most memorable form of advertising.
* Prior to the 1980s music in television advertisements was generally limited to jingles and incidental music; on some occasions lyrics to a popular song would be changed to create a theme song or a jingle for a particular product. In 1971 the converse occurred when a song written for a Coca-Cola advertisement was re-recorded as the pop single "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" by the New Seekers, and became a hit. Some pop and rock songs were re-recorded by cover bands for use in advertisements, but the cost of licensing original recordings for this purpose remained prohibitive until the late 1980s.
The use of previously-recorded popular songs in television advertisements began in earnest in 1985 when Burger King used the original recording of Aretha Franklin's song "Freeway of Love" in a television advertisement for the restaurant. This also occurred in 1987 when Nike used the original recording of The Beatles' song "Revolution" in an advertisement for athletic shoes. Since then, many classic popular songs have been used in similar fashion.
Songs can be used to concretely illustrate a point about the product being sold (such as Bob Seger's "Like a Rock" used for Chevy trucks), but more often are simply used to associate the good feelings listeners had for the song to the product on display. In some cases the original meaning of the song can be totally irrelevant or even completely opposite to the implication of the use in advertising; for example Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life", a song about heroin use addiction, has been used to advertise Royal Caribbean International, a cruise ship line. Music-licensing agreements with major artists, especially those that had not previously allowed their recordings to be used for this purpose, such as Microsoft's use of "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones and Apple Inc.'s use of U2's "Vertigo" became a source of publicity in themselves.
In early instances, songs were often used over the objections of the original artists, who had lost control of their music publishing the music of Beatles being perhaps the most well-known case; more recently artists have actively solicited use of their music in advertisements and songs have gained popularity and sales after being used in advertisements. A famous case is Levi's company, which has used several one hit wonders in their advertisements (songs such as "Inside", "Spaceman", and "Flat Beat").
Sometimes a controversial reaction has followed the use of some particular song on an advertisement. Often the trouble has been that people do not like the idea of using songs that promote values important for them in advertisements. For example Sly and the Family Stone's anti-racism song, "Everyday People", was used in a car advertisement, which angered among people.
Generic scores for advertisements often feature clarinets, saxophones, or various strings (such as the acoustic/electric guitars and violins) as the primary instruments.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, electronica music was increasingly used as background scores for television advertisements, initially for automobiles, and later for other technological and business products such as computers and financial services.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week; Cruise Bar hosts famous fashion event; MBFWA business wheels in motion
Cruise Bar Hosts Fashion Week...
When it comes to style the Cruise Bar and Restaurant is a perfect host partner for the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Australian Fashion Week.
For the first time in many years, Cruise Restaurant is open to the public everyday of fashion week for lunch and dinner.
Fashion Week is Sydney’s premier fashion and lifestyle event showcasing some of our most talented and contemporary designers.
The beautiful waterfront location of Cruise Bar in Circular Quay is an ideal location to enjoy gourmet food, decadent wines and delicious cocktails while enjoying the cultural surrounds that is Fashion week.
For more information visit their official website.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Business, fashion, beauty, deals and gossip...
Sydney will be enjoying a bevy of catwalk shows and party like events as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia commences tomorrow. But unlike the increasing number of fashion festivals across the country where people can buy tickets to events, MBFWA is invitation only.
Today was media registration day, which was quite an event in its own right.
Over five days, fashion designers show their latest collections to media reps, celebrities and retail buyers, and the response can be paramount to the bottom line.
This year happens to mark Mercedes-Benz’s return to Fashion Week as the title sponsor, which many media and fashion commentators have welcomed.
“The strong link between Mercedes-Benz and fashion was initiated in Australia with the launch of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in 1995, so it’s come full circle,” advised Mercedes-Benz senior manager of corporate communications David McCarthy.
The car maker’s Fashion Week events have spread around the world to places such as New York and Berlin, and to Swim Fashion Week in Miami.
The Mercedes-Benz’s sponsorship deal was not exactly a secret last year as Rosemount’s (wine) five-year run came to an end. The new deal is understood to be valued at million over three years but McCarthy says the details are confidential.
MBFWA comes with a many change. A key change from the festival organisers is that IMG Fashion have reduced the price of on-site venue fees. A trend over the past few years.
This year, it set back exhibitors ,250 to use the newly returned Tent at the Overseas Passenger Terminal as a catwalk venue, 00 to be a part of Fashion Week but show off-site and between 00 and 00 to showcase collections at The Rocks Pop-Up suites.
Two of the festival’s biggest names, Josh Goot and Dion Lee, pulled out a fortnight before their respective shows. The designers who have fallen by the wayside in the lead-up to the five-day event have either opted to concentrate on upcoming overseas shows (Lee), to focus on getting collections out to coincide with northern hemisphere seasons (Goot) or have chosen to disregard Fashion Week from the get-go, with Fairfax Media pointing to Alex Perry as the example.
For Melbourne Business School associate professor of marketing Mark Ritson, having Australian designers drop out is a “tricky” scenario.
“On the one hand, you have to respect any Australian designer focused on building their reputation overseas,” he says. “We are perilously under-represented in Paris and Milan.
“But at the same time, a designer has to be careful of burning branding bridges back home. That said, if Goot or Lee make it in Europe they’ll be welcomed back home in 2013 with open arms.”
Fashion Week is serious business. Alongside Mercedes-Benz, sponsors that have signed on this year include DHL, EYE, HP, Maybelline NY, Redken, Shangri-La Hotel Sydney, Pentax, Keystone Hospitality and Getty Images.
The NSW government, Destination NSW and Austrade are also supporting the event.
In addition, designers are obtaining their own sponsorships. Jayson Brunsdon’s show, for instance, is being presented by Myer and sponsored by Qantas, Woolmark, TRESemme, MAC Cosmetics and Joh Bailey.
Couture designer Johanna Johnson is the virgin Australian designer to showcase her collection at the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Presents show, which has previously featured big fashion names such as Herve Leger by Max Azria, Carolina Herrera and Badgley Mischka.
“To do [the Presents show] during our first year back was a priority,” McCarthy says.
Johnson recently found international success, with Hollywood actresses Christina Hendricks and Maya Rudolph wearing her feminine creations on the red carpet.
The show will have the same feel – glamour, lots of hand-beading and detailed finishes.
“I hadn’t really considered doing it and was focusing more on overseas expansion this year,” Johnson says.
“But we’re having so much feedback from Australians wanting to know more now, it will be really good to showcase our luxury lifestyle line and red carpet ready-to-wear.”
She initially signed on to show in the smallest of the three catwalk venues, the Box, but had to move the show to the Tent (the biggest) as the number of outfits she wanted to parade expanded.
“It’s our debut show so we want it done as well as it possibly can be,” she says.
Australian accessories giant Oroton is launching its first ready-to-wear collection. But for creative director Ana Maria Escobar, the clothes are there to show off the accessories – be they handbags, jewellery or shoes.
“The biggest thing is when I walked into the stores, I saw they needed something soft to highlight the accessories,” she says.
Customers can expect “understated quality” from the new Oroton clothing range.
“To me, functionality is important,” Escobar says.
“So are the materials . . . it can be a simple singlet but made out of really beautiful silk or customised fabrics. There’s a tone of heritage as well.”
While Oroton views Fashion Week as important, Escobar says there is also “life beyond those 15 minutes on the catwalk”.
For the retailer, it’s about reminding people of the brand.
“We want to talk a little louder about the product we design,” she says. “Fashion Week gives us that space without having to scream.”
This year, a great spread of overseas buyers will be in attendance, many from online retailers such as Net-A-Porter, My Wardrobe, Shopbop, Moda Operandi and ASOS. Department store Harvey Nichols and Hong Kong-based Joyce will also have buyers present.
The retail picture in Australia is not particularly strong, and IBISWorld analysts are predicting growth for the local rag trade over the coming financial year will be flat at just 0.5 per cent.
IBISWorld general manager Karen Dobie says the high Australian dollar is a double-edged sword for retailers, as local vendors can buy overseas at a favourable rate, but increasingly tech-savvy competition is straining profit margins.
New to MBFWA: Dylan Cooper; Flowers for a Vagabond; Toi et Moi Sydney; By Johnny; Oroton; Watson x Watson; An Ode to No One; Jenny Kee; Aje; Roppa Pemmaraju; Bless’d Are The Meek and Nana Judy
Not present this year: Dion Lee; Josh Goot; Alex Perry; Arnsdorf; Morrison; Friend of Mine; Flannel; Karla Spetic; Lover; Therese Rawsthorne; Ms Couture; Rachel Gilbert; Little Joe Woman (voluntary administration); Nookie; Amber & Thomas; Marnie Skillings; Kate Sylvester; Shakuhachi; Bianca Spender; Dhini; Camilla & Marc; White Suede; Yeojin Bae; Lisa Blue; Limedrop; Stolen Girlfriends Club; Alistair Trung; Saint Augustine Academy (which shut up shop late last year)

Since launching her label eight years ago, Camilla Franks continues to receive global recognition as an Australian designer who has a unique approach to creating colorful, playful and luxurious lifestyle fashion.
Her unique ready-to-wear and resort wear designs are becoming highly sought after products, capturing the attentions of celebrities and fashionistas alike. Camilla’s global fan club (which includes the likes of Beyonce Knowles, Miranda Kerr, Kate Hudson, Lily Allen and Gwen Stefani) reached new heights 2 years ago when the queen of television, Oprah Winfrey, glowed in one of her designs while taping her ‘down under’ series. The general public and the fashion world gushed and stock sold out overnight. Camilla is definitely a brand on the move.
So, how did Camilla Franks become one of Australia’s most iconic fashion designers? This iconic brand came to be whilst Camilla was exploring her passions for theatrical artistry. Here, she embraced her inner creative spirit to craft beautiful elaborate costumes for the various characters in her productions. It wasn’t long before the Australian fashion market caught eye of these imaginative, easy-to-wear designs and catapulted Camilla on this amazing journey.
Today, Camilla has evolved from beach and resort fashion into ready-to-wear clothes that cater to all her client’s needs. Globally, Camilla has begun weaving into the various fashion niches, resulting in a kaleidoscope of high-end editorial and extending an already growing customer database.
Over eight years, Camilla has produced nine collections: these include the highly anticipated 2011/12’s Spring Summer Collection, Labyrinth; which has received significant media attention and 2012’s Autumn Winter Collection Caravanserai, Camilla’s second winter season. The success of her brand is derived from Camilla’s philosophy that “all women have the right to look and feel beautiful no matter their age, colour, size or origin”, this is also a testament to the company’s popularity and growing awareness.
Camilla is a brand that celebrates women, self-expression, beauty and individuality. The signature ‘Camilla’ piece is a statement of brilliant colour, graphics and material rhythm. It is a celebration of shapes that can be tailored to individual styles and that follow global trends.

Cheka Kidogo exhibition, London
This is just one of some 30 of Rankin's great portraits, set in exhibition panels I created for the Cheka Kidogo exhibition. Photos of exhibition: Kathy Slack
Cheka kidogo means ‘laugh a little’ in Swahili.
And surprisingly, people still are – even though they are living in the midst of one of the world’s deadliest civil wars, which has already killed five million people, and made more than one million homeless.
World-renowned portrait photographer Rankin travelled with Oxfam to a refugee camp near Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the heart of this generally unreported conflict.
The result is a stunning series of pictures. They capture the resilience of the people who live there, despite the daily threat of violence and rape they face. These portraits show people’s true personalities, and highlight their humanity, their strength, and their hope for the future.
Don’t miss this chance to view these remarkable photographs!

Mosaic of Hamadan Gathering
Mosaic of Hamadan Gathering
Soudeh asked me to generate portraits mosaic of attendants of 3rd Iranian Flickr Gathering in Hamadan. I know, I'm too late ;)
We were 33 persons, from 7 to 58 years, from Tehran, Isfahan, Mashhad, Hamadan, Tabriz, Paris (France), and Vienna (Austria).
My other photos of this gathering can be found here and all gathering photos can be found here.
This photo was added to flickr explore (interestingness) of 27 August 2006.

About Hamadan (from this sorce by HORIZON, originally from WikiPedia):
more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamedan
Hamedan is the capital city of Hamadan Province of Iran. It had an estimated population of 550,284 in 2005.
Hamadan is believed to be amongst the oldest Iranian cities and one of the OLDEST in the world.
Hamadan is a green mountainous area on the foothills of the 3574-meter Alwand Mountain,in the mid west of Iran. The city is 1850 meters above sea level.
The special nature of this old city and its historic sites attract tourists during the summer to this city, located approximately 400km southwest of Tehran.
History
Golden Rhyton from Iran's Achaemenid period from Ecbatana. National Museum of Iran.Hamadan has a distinguished place among all historical cities of Iran and geographically located at 34°51'N 48°31'E.Some historians believe that Hamadan's construction dates back to 3000 BC and according to an inscribtion from the first Assyrian king , it is aributed to 1100 BC.
Hamadan was established by the Medes, and was the capital of the Median empire. It became then one of the multiple capital cities of the Achaemenid Dynasty and it has been referred to by several name variations throughout its long history, namely: Ecbatana (Median), Ecbatana (classical Greek rendition of Hagmatana) and several corruptions or mispronunciations of the previous two in subsequent centuries.
During the Parthian era, Ctesiphon was the capital of the country, and Hamadan the summer capital and residence of the Parthian rulers. After the Parthians, the Sassanids constructed their summer palaces in Hamadan. In the year 633 the war of Nahavand took place and Hamadan came into the hands of the muslim Arabs, at times it thrived and at times it witnessed poverty.
During the Buwayhids , it suffered much damage. In the 11th century, the Seljuks shifted their capital from Baghdad to Hamadan.
The city of Hamadan which was always assaulted by the rise and fall of powers, was completely destroyed during the Timurid invasion. During the Safavid era the city thrived. Thereafter, in the year 18th century, Hamadan was surrendered to the Ottomans, but due to the courage and chivalry of Nadir Shah Afshar, Hamadan was cleared off the invaders and according to the peace treaty between Iran and the Ottomans , it was returned to Iran. The city of Hamadan lay on the Silk Road and even in the last centuries enjoyed good prospects in commerce and trade being on the main road network in the western region of the country.
Climate
Hamadan province lies in a temperate mountainous region to the east of Zagros. The vast plains of the north and northeast of the province are influenced by strong winds, that almost last throughout the year. The various air currents of this region are: the north and north west winds of the spring and winter seasons, which are usually humid and bring about rainfall. The west-east air currents that blow in the autumn, and the local winds that develop due to difference in air-pressure between the elevated areas and the plains, like the blind wind of the Asad Abad region. Hamadan being in the vicinity of the Alvand mountains has a cold, mountainous climate, with snowy winters. In fact it is one of the coldest cities in Iran. The temperature may drop below -30 °C on the coldest days. Heavy snowfalls are common during winter. Summer is short , and the weather is mild and pleasant and mostly sunny.
Culture
An example of a traditional Rug of Hamedan.Hamadan is also home to many poets and cultural celebrities. The city is also said to be among the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.
Handicrafts
Hamadan has always been well-known for handicrafts like leather and ceramic work as well as for its beautiful carpets.
Iran's Cultural Heritage Organization lists 207 sites of historical and cultural significance in the city of Hamedan alone.
Legend has it that the biblical Esther is buried in Hamedan.
The scientist and writer known in the west as Avicenna (Abu Ali Sina) is buried in Hamedan.
The 11th century Persian poet Baba Taher is also interred in Hamedan.
Contemporary Culture
People of Hamedan are very proud of their old history. Another source of their pride is Avicenna (aka Bouali, Buali, Ebn-e-sina, Pur-e-Sina) who is buried in Hamedan. In Hamedan, you can find primary schools, secondary schools, high schools, colleges, and the main city's university names after him. Also, there are many shops and businesses named after him. The main street of Hamedan is also named Bouali. Bouali Street is a very busy one and in fact, a favorite pastime of Hamedanians is to troll up and down the street where they frequently bump into their acquaintances.

New York tango, Apr 2010 - 10

*****************************************
Let me begin with a disclaimer: I do not dance the tango, and I know little or nothing about its history, its folklore, or even its steps and rhythms. I'm vaguely aware that it originated in Argentina (and Uruguay) in the 1890s, that a new style known as "tango nuevo" began to emerge in the late 1990s, and that various actors and actresses -- including Jessica Biel, Colin Firth, Antonio Banderas, Madonna, Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger(!), among others -- have performed the tango in various movies. But beyond that, it never really occurred to me that it played any significant role here in the U.S.
That is, not until the summer of 2009, when I happened to return to my hotel, on a business trip to Washington, DC, just as a local gathering of tango aficionados was dancing to their music in a nearby square known as Freedom Plaza. I photographed the event (see my Flickr set Last tango in Washington) and learned from one of the participants that there were similar informal events in New York City, at the South Street seaport, during the summer and fall weekends. When I got back to New York, I searched on the Internet, and found a schedule of upcoming tango events just as my Washington acquaintance had indicated; but travel schedules, inclement weather, and other distractions prevented me from actually attending any of them; by the end of the autumn season, I had forgotten all about it.
For some reason, something reminded me of the tango again this spring -- perhaps some music that I overheard, perhaps a scene on some otherwise forgettable television show. In any case, I searched again on the Internet, and discovered that a tango "event" would be taking place on a Sunday afternoon -- but not at the South Street Seaport (on the east side of Manhattan, near the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges), but rather at Pier 45, where Christopher Street runs into the Hudson River in Greenwich Village. The event was scheduled to take place between 3:30 and 7:30 PM, and another quick search on the Internet informed me that sunset would occur at 7:30 PM. So I arrived a little before 6 PM, as the sun was beginning to drop down in the western sky, and photographed for a little more than an hour.
I captured some 522 images, of which 75 have survived in this Flickr set. For the majority of the photos, I stood at the end of the pier, with my back to the Hudson River and the sinking sun; the sun broke in and out of clouds on the horizon -- and because I was wearing sunglasses, I didn't fully appreciate the extent of sun-glare that was often striking the faces of the dancers, as well as the shadows where the sun wasn't hitting at all. But I think I recovered most of the inadvertent over-exposure and under-exposure with some post-processing on the computer... I was also able to get some shots facing westward and southward, so that you could see the New Jersey skyline behind the dancers; indeed, there are a couple of shots with the Statue of Liberty and the Verrazano Bridge in the background. (Note to self: come back here at twilight, on a Sunday evening in mid-summer; it could well be even more spectacular.)
Since I have no personal expertise (or even competence) at the dance, there's not much that I can say about what's going on; I have to let the pictures speak for themselves. Though it wasn't universally true, I noticed several occasions where the women were taller than their partners; I gather that that's an advantage when the dancers are twirling and twisting around. Also, I had the distinct impression -- just as was the case in Washington last summer -- that few (if any) of the dancers were "couples" in the traditional sense. Indeed, many of them seemed to be strangers who had met for the first time at this tango event, but who seemed to enjoy the experience of the dance together. And others, from what little I could tell, might have encountered one another at previous tango events -- but had no other interactions or relationship with one another.
In any case, I had photographed everything I could imagine photographing by a little after 7 PM. I put away my camera equipment, walked a few blocks east to Hudson Street to enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant with my wife, and made a note to check the Internet again for future tango events in Central Park and the South Street Seaport. If you'd like to pursue this on your own, check out Richard Lipkin's Guide to Argentine Tango in New York City.
October Cover Fakeness
There is all sorts of hand-wringing about fake celebrities and their photoshopped beauty, but remember that even trains are artificially enhanced.
I think this latest flyer cover is quite funny. The selling point is that the car has a real metal finish, so it's shinier than regular plastic. The lower photo is realistic, that is more or less how it looks if you held it in your hand. The idea was to make a night scene with reflecting lights and whatnot.
Although I made a shiny version I liked, they wanted more shiny, so it ended up being this weird, over-the-top, garish gleaming thing. I'm like, "You're kidding, right?" When it was approved. Kinda funny.

great fun to be had stalking celebrity chefs at the nec. it was difficult to get a photo of james martin, as i was stood behind hundreds of adoring/swooning/giggling females (and a few blokes who were trying to look like they'd been dragged along to the james martin set by their adoring female, but were clearly secretly enjoying themselves).

Annie Liebovitz at the Corcoran
www.corcoran.org/leibovitz/
FROM THE VERY BEGINNING of her career, Annie Leibovitz has redefined the modern celebrity portrait, altering the way we think about the people who populate our cultural landscape. Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer’s Life, 1990–2005 includes more than 200 photographs, encompassing well-known work made on editorial assignment as well as images of her family and close friends. “I don’t have two lives,” Leibovitz says. “This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it.”
The exhibition features many of Leibovitz’s best-known portraits of public figures, including actors Jamie Foxx, Nicole Kidman, and Brad Pitt; athletes preparing for the 1996 Olympic Games; George W. Bush with members of his Cabinet at the White House; and her famous images of Queen Elizabeth II of England, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and then-pregnant actress Demi Moore, one of the most recognizable photographs of its time.
The show also highlights portraits of artists, architects, and writers such as Richard Avedon, Brice Marden, Philip Johnson, Cindy Sherman, and Eudora Welty. Leibovitz’s assignment work includes reportage from the siege of Sarajevo in the early 1990s, the election of Hillary Clinton to the U.S. Senate, and the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. The artist has photographed landscapes from the American West, the Jordanian desert, and the wilds of upstate New York, and these are featured prominently.
At the heart of the exhibition, Leibovitz’s personal photography documents intimate moments from her life, including the birth and childhood of her three daughters, as well as vacations, reunions and rites of passage with her parents and extended family. A Photographer’s Life threads together the two sides of Leibovitz’s work both chronologically and creatively, projecting a narrative of the artist’s private world against the backdrop of her public image as one of America’s best-known portrait photographers.
Dempsey-Willard Fight
"Dempsey-Willard Fight" Jack Dempsey, 25 Jun 1895 - May 1983 & Jess Willard, 29 Dec 1881 - 15 Dec 1968, by James Montgomery Flagg, Oil on canvas, 1944: On July 4, 1919, challenger Jack Dempsey met reigning champ Jess Willard in an eagerly awaited bout for the heavyweight championship of the world. Having demolished a series of opponents to earn a shot at the crown, Dempsey was a decided underdog in the matchup with Willard, who was five inches taller and fifty-eight pounds heavier than his opponent and considered unbeatable. Yet when the two boxers met before a capacity crowd, the contest was brief and brutal. In the opening round, Dempsey (in white trunks) unleashed a torrent of punishing blows that felled Willard seven times. By the end of round three, Willard was finished, and Dempsey was the new champion. He defended his title until 1926, when he lost to Gene Tunney.
More than twenty years after upsetting Willard, Dempsey commissioned James Montgomery Flagg to commemorate the historic heavyweight contest. Basing his composition on photographs taken during the fight, Flagg produced this mammoth painting in which the crouching Dempsey bobs and weaves his way to victory. Flagg also pictured a number of celebrities at ringside, including satirist Damon Runyon and cartoonist Rube Goldberg. On November 14, 1944, the painting was unveiled at Jack Dempsey's Broadway bar and restaurant, where it occupied a place of honor until the popular watering hole closed in 1974

Biden's Journalist-in-the-Closet Caper Is a Big Bleeping Deal
By Kyle-Anne Shiver
Vice President Joe Biden gave a speech last Wednesday in Florida. The occasion was a 0-per-head fundraiser for Democrat Senator Bill Nelson. The Orlando Sentinel was the press-pool-on-point to cover the event for the people of the United States of America.
The Sentinel sent one reporter. Said reporter was immediately confined by a Biden advance-team member to a storage closet, given a bottle of water and kept inside by a Biden thug at the closet door. Biden's prepared speech -- but nothing whatsoever else -- got "covered" for the people of the U.S.A. And the intrepid press-pool-on-point "reporter" limped back to the Sentinel with his little tail between his legs, happy to have had a little water to drink and a cell phone to keep him company during his confinement.
Wimp is too mild a word.
Anyone care to opine on what James O'Keefe might have done in such a circumstance? I would love to have seen that. But I digress into wishful thinking.
Matt Drudge had a source and propelled the story. (I say extra prayers every night for Matt Drudge.) The too-cowardly-for-words-now MSM promptly yawned, cowered and went back to licking the backside of the Obama administration.
The "most transparent" administration in the history of the world locks a reporter in a closet to keep him from mingling with Party fat-cats at the mega-mansion of a mega-rich Democrat donor and this is not front-page, headline news?
Yes, Biden's journalist-in-the-closet caper is a big bleeping deal.
However, it does interfere with the most-transparent-administration-in-history narrative.
So sorry, America. Go back to work, pay your taxes like good little sheep and don't try to pry underneath the covers of transparent thuggery.
Your media -- whose job is supposed to be keeping you truly informed on all elected officials and government workers -- is still held in thrall of the Obama cult. Your media elites have written you off. They are intrepid reporters no more.
Your once-valiant, go-to-any-lengths-to-get-the-whole-story journalists are now the Puppy-Pack.
They follow their masters -- Barack and Joe -- wherever they allow them to go.
The Puppy-Pack huddle for treats -- tidbits of carefully-chosen "news" and micro-managed diets of behind-kissing "access."
The Puppy-Pack eagerly awaits their masters' call to bark-attack any intruder who threatens their masters' delight. They'll surround a Sarah Palin or a Michelle Bachmann and yelp ‘til the cows come home just so they won't get shut out of the masters' hug-fest at sundown. They'll scamper ‘round any unfounded rumor of Tea-Party incivility, while letting union death threats and bomb scares go completely unnoticed-- as long as the masters' hushpuppies keep flying their way. The Puppy-Pack will snarl, yelp, whine and wallow in dirt as long as Barack and Joe keep whistling and calling their names.
When did this piteous reduction in the stature of our fourth estate begin? Well, it began to great 60s-radical fanfare several decades ago. Journalists-in-waiting eagerly imbibed the "America-is-really-horrible" kool-aid and were gulled into believing they would spearhead our revolution into socialist utopia. They waited for the One they were waiting for, all the while dumbing-down their profession and convincing themselves they were really the "smart" Pavlovian pets.
But the disgusting decline of our fourth estate really hit gutter-level rock bottom during the 2008 presidential campaign.
Way back on the campaign trail, long before Barack became the One and Joe became the Two, our media elites were becoming the Puppy-Pack.
When Barack Obama attracted throngs of young people, the Puppy-Pack yelped his praises. But they ignored the really big back story on how these massive "political" rallies were preceded by free rock concerts and free food and beverages. Only happy barks allowed for the new master.
When Barack Obama brought his postage-stamp sized resume to the national stage, MSNBC Puppy-in-chief, Chris Matthews got all "wee-weed up" and felt a "thrill" go up his leg. Puppy Matthews barked this "news" to Gnarling-Puppy pal, Keith Olbermann, with customary spittle flying and our press's lurch at gutter-land was nearly complete.
But then, something scary drew the Pavlovian pets' attention and one of them nearly broke through the conditioning spell. Andrea Mitchell was sent by MSNBC to cover candidate Obama's overseas celebrity tour for the American people and she tried to make a break for reality-regained territory.
While her ever-enthralled puppy pals were chomping for treats, Andrea took notice of the One's "message management." With a momentary romp into reality, Ms. Mitchell showed the tenacity of a bulldog, pointing out - while on air - that candidate Obama was staging "fake" news with "carefully managed" video-ops, no press conferences and no real journalists allowed to ask a single question. Ms. Mitchell even went so far as to say she had never seen a presidential candidate do this kind of thing before.
Andrea was barking her little head off to save her profession - and us, but the Puppy-Pack reined her in and now tenacious Andrea is just one of the pack.
Alas, the pack instinct is nearly impossible to break.
So, by the time Obama and Biden were sworn in, the once-valiant, once-intelligent, once-fully-human American media had been completely reduced to the Puppy-Pack that now begs for access and cowers in closets.
The Puppy-Pack lines up for "press" reports every day, where they are treated to the master's latest lap-dog's hush-puppy avoidance tactics. Still, the Puppy-Pack stays in line and doesn't even complain when they never get to actually ask the master any questions. Press conferences are far too unwieldy for the new master to handle, so the Puppy-Pack just goes with the flow.
And as every sentient American knows by now, the only people who watch or listen to Barack and Joe's Puppy-Pack are the sheeple.
Like a herd, the sheeple follow the Puppy-Pack down the yellow brick road where civilizations go to die.
The rest of us must shut the whole MSM Puppy-Pack and their sheeple in a closet. And go about the business of saving the country, oblivious to their senseless, piteous barking. Otherwise, this useless pack of puppies and their incompetent masters are going to drive us all over the cliff with nary even a prayer to spare us
THE ONLY THING IN AMERICA THATS MORE DISGUSTING THAN THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IS THE SIGHT OF THE AMERICAN PRESS DROOLING OVER HIS EVERY WORD

FOURTH ESTATE : .........present meaning, has been attributed to Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797), a British politician. It comes from a quote in Thomas Carlyle's book, "Heros and Hero Worship in History" (1841).
"Burke said that there were three Estates in Parliament, but in the Reporters Gallery yonder, there sat a fourth Estate more important far than they all."
BUT NOT IN THE UNITED STATES
THOSE DAYS ARE GONE

What becomes a Legend most?
"What becomes a Legend most?" Shirley MacLaine. By Bill King, 1977. Photolithographic halftone poster. 70.5 x 55.2 cm (27 3/4 x 21 3/4 in.): Celebrity photographer Bill King took over the successful Blackglama campaign from Richard Avedon in 1972. When he photographed Shirley MacLaine, King and agency associate Peter Rogers decided in advance that they wanted a dance shot. Although MacLaine worked hard for the camera, according to Rogers, the perfect image was not easy to capture, especially as the actress insisted on wearing white majorette boots for many of the pictures. But she liked the final picture—without the boots—and it became one of the most popular Blackglama posters.
