PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. – Service members mingled with celebrities on the Monterey Peninsula as Military Appreciation Day at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am took place Feb. 8. All law enforcement, firefighters and military personnel plus one accompanied guest were admitted free of charge on the day which features the popular 3M Celebrity Challenge. Once again this year, musician Kenny G selected service members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center to act as his caddy for the event. Many of the participating celebrities went out of their way to greet the large number of military that were in attendance as spectators and sign autographs.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Tournament host Tiger Woods will honor wounded warriors on the first tee box during a patriotic salute to U.S. military personnel and their Families to officially open the 2009 AT&T National PGA Tour event July 1 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

Several wounded warriors will join Woods on the first tee at 11 a.m. to watch members of the 101st Airborne Division Parachute Demonstration Team skydive onto the fairway with golf balls for the tournament’s ceremonial first shots.

Maj. Ken Dwyer of the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, N.C., and Staff Sgt. Ramon Padilla of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington will join Woods to officially launch the tournament.

“Hopefully people come out, not only to watch the players, but also to say thank you to all of the servicemen and women who are coming out here,” Woods said. “If it wasn’t for them, what they are doing overseas, things might be different here.”

In 2007, Former President George H.W. Bush hit the ceremonial first shot at the inaugural AT&T National. Last year, children of deployed servicemembers had the honor of joining tournament host Fred Couples, who filled in for Woods, who was recovering from knee surgery.

The U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard Drill Team will perform, and Jessica Simpson will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the patriotic ceremony. Simpson recently performed for troops in Iraq and Kuwait.

Woods will partner the same day with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo to play in the third annual Earl D. Woods Memorial Pro-Am. Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell, wide receiver Antwaan Randle El and Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau will also play in the pro-am.

Boudreau will be tuning up for the 2009 Bruce Boudreau-John Anderson Celebrity Classic, scheduled for July 27 at Lionhead Golf and Country Club in Brampton, Ontario. Boudreau and Anderson, head coach of the Atlanta Thrashers, both played for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Military Caddie Program again will feature troops serving as caddies for the pros on the seventh hole during the pro-am. Two years ago at that hole, Woods handed his putter to Sgt. Michael Woods of Army Materiel Command at Fort Belvoir, Va. Sgt. Woods then knocked down a 12-foot putt for the play of the day at Congressional as the gallery roared.

The Tiger Woods Foundation donated 30,000 tickets to the military to attend one day of the AT&T National, scheduled for June 28 through July 5. Those unable to get tickets through an ITT/ITR office can show a military identification card at the gate and receive complimentary admission – one ticket per ID. Accompanying children 12-and-under will be admitted for free.

“To have the military there and to have everyone support the event like they did the first year … having the players just rave about it, having all the fans rave about it, it was just such a huge success,” Tiger said. “We are just trying to build on that momentum we created the first year.”

Lockheed Martin’s Military Pavilion, located near the fourth tee, will provide snacks, beverages and a prime viewing area for military ticketholders Tuesday through Sunday of the tournament week.

All spectators are welcome to visit the USO Care Package Tent, which will sit adjacent to the Lockheed Martin Pavilion, to help assemble care packages for deployed troops.

The Tiger Woods Foundation donated 30,000 tickets to the military to attend one day of the AT&T National, scheduled for June 28 through July 5. Those unable to get tickets through an ITT/ITR office can show a military identification card at the gate and receive complimentary admission – one ticket per ID. Accompanying children 12-and-under will be admitted for free.

“To have the military there and to have everyone support the event like they did the first year … having the players just rave about it, having all the fans rave about it, it was just such a huge success,” Tiger said. “We are just trying to build on that momentum we created the first year.”

Lockheed Martin’s Military Pavilion, located near the fourth tee, will provide snacks, beverages and a prime viewing area for military ticketholders Tuesday through Sunday of the tournament week.

All spectators are welcome to visit the USO Care Package Tent, which will sit adjacent to the Lockheed Martin Pavilion, to help assemble care packages for deployed troops.

Clearly the art world has to take some risks to both immunise itself from any devastating critique on the one hand and to possibly adapt its processes so it is not out of step. So is Carroll/Fletcher acting as a kind of art world canary with their Eva & Franco Mattes show?

"Their interventions and subversive hoaxes can be traced to the tradition of the Situationist International's use of 'detournements' or diversions of existing cultural productions, in order to subvert the originals and destabilise the structured modes of understanding reality; a technique that reach far beyond mire scandal and develops into a powerful critique of contemporary commodity and spectacle society."

To what extent does a state or commercial gallery frame in fact neutralise oppositional work by artists? What are the mechanisms of this neutralisation?

Can capital allow its own destruction by the freedom given its own commodities?
The Horrible Histories' Luddite Song is an example both commodified and progressive. The owner of this series is very rich and yet it has a true spirit of both history from below and the new history about it. Even more so in the live show that tours regional theatres.

How much is it my own utopian fantasy of an oppositional movement from outside of capital, from the poor in a way, that mounts a challenge to the system. Could it in fact be a coalition of rich pop stars, best selling authors, celebrity artists, perhaps with the help of the new feature documentary makers that come together and turn culture against the state?

Could the State itself accomodate art that moves us towards a new form of democratic accountability? Handsworth Songs in the Migrations show. Can 60 minutes be negated by its institutional frame? The point is what happens overal. Looking at the list of sponsors and patrons it is really unthinkable that their interests would be undercut by such an institution.

As I pointed out in an earlier set of Flickr album (shown here, I do not dance the tango, and I know little or nothing about its history, its folklore, or even its steps and rhythms. I'm vaguely aware that it originated in Argentina (and Uruguay) in the 1890s, that a new style known as "tango nuevo" began to emerge in the late 1990s, and that various actors and actresses -- including Jessica Biel, Colin Firth, Antonio Banderas, Madonna, Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger(!), among others -- have performed the tango in various movies. But beyond that, it never really occurred to me that it played any significant role here in the U.S.

That is, not until the summer of 2009, when I happened to return to my hotel, on a business trip to Washington, DC, just as a local gathering of tango aficionados was dancing to their music in a nearby square known as Freedom Plaza. I photographed the event (see my Flickr set Last tango in Washington) and learned from one of the participants that there were similar informal events in New York City, at the South Street seaport, during the summer and fall weekends. When I got back to New York, I searched on the Internet, and found a schedule of upcoming tango events just as my Washington acquaintance had indicated; but travel schedules, inclement weather, and other distractions prevented me from actually attending any of them; by the end of the autumn season, I had forgotten all about it.

For some reason, something reminded me of the tango again this spring -- perhaps some music that I overheard, perhaps a scene on some otherwise forgettable television show. In any case, I searched again on the Internet, and discovered that a tango "event" would be taking place on a Sunday afternoon -- but not at the South Street Seaport (on the east side of Manhattan, near the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges), but rather at Pier 45, where Christopher Street runs into the Hudson River in Greenwich Village. The event takes place every Sunday, usually from 4-8 PM, and I made my first visit in mid-April, which led to this set of photos.

I decided to come back again in mid-July, even though I knew it would be much hotter ... and indeed, it was so hot that the music did not even begin until 6 PM. But then the dancers began to appear, one couple after another, until there were a couple dozen couples filling a large space under a sheltering canopy. And since it was the end of a hot summer evening, tango wasn't the only thing going on: there were people sunbathing, watching the boats on the river, playing frisbee, or simply enjoying themselves. I photographed a little of everything; you can focus your attention on whatever you'd like...

Fillette aux nattes et au chapeau vert, an intimate portrait of Picasso's daughter,
Paloma, was painted when the little girl was about seven years old and the artist was seventy-four. For Picasso, being a father at such an advanced age had its advantages: By the time Paloma was born in 1949, Picasso was already an established celebrity in the art world and financially secure, and he had more time to devote to fatherhood than
he did during earlier phases of his life. Unlike his depictions of his son Paolo from the 1920s or daughter Maya from the 1930s, his many paintings and drawings of Paloma and her older brother, Claude, from the 1950s reveal the ease and familiarity that he shared with his two youngest children. Picasso often presents them playing in the company of their mother, Françoise Gilot, or drawing together in their nursery. For this composition, however, he has focused on little Paloma by herself, her attention devoted explicitly to her father as he draws her picture.

Paloma's portrait is one of the few that Picasso completed of his daughter in 1956, when his attention was primarily focussed on images inspired by his new romantic companion, Jacqueline Roque. From the inscription on the reverse, however, we know that Picasso must have completed at least three versions of his daughter around this
time. Paloma's presence in Picasso's life increasingly diminished as the artist grew closer and more dependent upon Jacqueline. Additionally, with the publication of her mother's memoirs in later years, Picasso's relationship with his children by Françoise Gilot became particularly strained. In 1956, however, Paloma was welcomed at the house of her father, although she had to share her time with his new companion who
would eventually become her step-mother. The fact that she was the subject of her father's artistic attention in the present work must have been reassuring to the little girl.

Still, Picasso's picture of Paloma here had larger implications for the artist and his future production. The canvas dates from 1956, the year before Picasso would commence his life-long-anticipated investigation of Diego Velazquez's Las Meninas. When comparing the present work with the renderings of the Infanta Margarita that
Picasso completed only a few months later, we can see that the legendary 17th century Spanish court was not far from his mind. Perhaps it was his focus on Paloma's image here that brought about the creative encouragement he needed to forge forward with his more ambitious undertaking the following year. Providing us with his remembrance of Paloma's visits with her father is David Douglas Duncan, whose insight gives us yet another portrait of the girl who would one day become a creative force herself: "Paloma was different. No other child who came to La Californie radiated the same independence of character, or simmering, yet remote
feeling of being already in command of her own destiny. She sat drawing beside her
father as an equal while he gouged linoleum posters for a Vallauris festival. Often she
stood quietly at his side, arm on his shoulder, while he was drawing his private visions - - and she would also be lost in her future dreams while comfortably hidden behind his masks. She had found herself: she was eight" (D. D. Duncan, Picasso and Jacqueline,
New York, 1988, p. 134).

I had a lunchtime dentist appointment in midtown Manhattan the other day, and when it was over, I decided to walk a couple blocks over to Bryant Park, behind the New York Public Library. It was a sunny day, and I thought I might see some gorgeous babes sunbathing on the park lawn in their bikinis (even being an amateur photographer is a tough job, but someone's gotta do it). If not, I thought perhaps I'd find some photogenic tourists or oddball New Yorkers that I could photograph.

As it turns out, almost all of the central lawn was being covered over with some kind of wooden platform -- presumably for an upcoming concert performance of some kind -- so nobody was sunbathing out on the grass. But since that area was unavailable, and since it was still the lunchtime period, the periphery around the central lawn was chock-a-block with people. There's now a cafe immediately behind (i.e., to the west) of the library itself, and it was doing a land-office business. And all along the north and south sides of the park, as well as the broader western side, there were tables and chairs and benches where people could enjoy their lunch with whatever food or entertainment they had brought along.

I was already aware of the pentanque court on the western side of the park, and knew that I'd find one or two good pictures there. But I didn't realize that the Parks Department had set up two ping-pong tables, as well as several tables for chess-players. In addition, there were a few card games underway, and there was also a section set aside for people who wanted to borrow local newspapers to read.

As for the people: I had to remind myself that because Bryant Park is smack in the middle of mid-town Manhattan (a block away from Times Square, filling the square block between 41st/42nd street, and 5th/6th Avenue), most of the people enjoying their lunch were office workers. So the men typically wore slacks and dress shirts, and a surprising number of them were also wearing suits and ties. The women wore dresses and skirts, and generally looked quite fashionable and presentable. Of course, there were also tourists and students and miscellaneous others; but overall, it was a much more "upscale" bunch of people than I'm accustomed to seeing in my own residential area on the Upper West Side.

I was surprised by how many people were sitting alone -- eating alone, reading alone, listening to music alone, dozing alone, or just staring into space alone. You'll see some of them in this album, though I didn't want to over-emphasize their presence; equally important, many of the loners just weren't all that interesting from a photogenic perspective. So you'll also see lots of couples, some children, a couple of families, and occasionally larger groups of people who were eating and chatting and enjoying the warm summer day.

Three activities dominated the scene, all of which were fairly predictable, under the circumstances: eating, reading, and talking on cellphones. You would expect people to be eating at lunch-time, of course; and you wouldn't be surprised at the notion of people reading a book as they sat behind the New York Public Library on a warm, sunny day. But the pervasiveness of the cellphones was quite astonishing ... oh, yeah, there were a few laptops, too, but fewer than I might have imagined.

I've photographed Bryant Park several times over the past 40 years, going back to some photos of 1969 Vietnam War protest marches that you can see in this album. I was here in the summer of 2008 to take these photos; I came back in January 2009 to take these photos of the winter scene; and I returned again for these pictures in March 2009 and these these pictures in the late spring of 2009; all of these have been collected into a Flickr "collection" of albums that you can find here. Shhhh. Marge, he's a good digger!- June 20

In this episode: Homer buys Bart a radio transmitter which Bart uses to imitate a child getting stuck down the well; when he goes to retreive the radio after realizing he labeled it "Property of Bart Simpson", he, himself, gets stuck down the well.

In this picture: Sting, one of the many celebrities on hand to help rescue Bart is digging him out. Sting says he has to help when his fans are in need, to which Marge replies that she's never heard him play any of Sting's records. Hence, Homer responds with "Shh, Marge, he's a good digger!"

Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth attend 'Snow White and the Huntsman' movie premiere - Bondi Junction, Sydney

Kristen Stewart, Australia's own Chris Hemsworth and a swag of other celebrities attended the Sydney premiere of 'Snow White' at Bondi Junction in Sydney earlier this evening.

Hundreds of fans and dozens of news media covered the event for the movie which is tipped to be a big money winner and a favourite with critics.

Well done to everyone involved in the success of this hot new Hollywood movie.

Australian star Chris Hemsworth has been enjoying some time off back home with his family, ahead of the Australian premiere of Snow White And The Huntsman.

Hemsworth was photographed earlier today enjoying some free time in Sydney.

On a rare day-off the former Home And Away star took the opportunity to go for a surf, despite the cold weather.

He was also photographed with his shirt off taking a dip in the pool at the Park Hyatt.

Hemsworth's acting career has taken off in Hollywood with recent appearances in super-hero blockbusters Thor and The Avengers.

He credits much of his success to his parents, who always supported his career. "When most people said it (acting) is crazy ... they said, "The couch will always be your spare bedroom ..." Hemsworth told the Seven Network's Sunrise program on Tuesday.

The new father also said he gained a lot of experience with children from babysitting his manager's kids and his older brother's three children.

"We were around kids a lot," Hemsworth said.

Hemsworth walked the red carpet with co-star Kristen Stewart at the film premiere at Bondi Junction's Event Cinemas tonight.

In his next project, Hemsworth plays racing-car driver James Hunt in Ron Howard's Formula One film Rush.

A release date for the film hasn't been set but we understand it will be in time for the 2013 Oscars.

Amanda: an appreciation

I am uploading this during a weekend in which, thus far, the only photography I have done has been a private shoot for a friend. None of the pictures I took then will end up on Flickr. It is possible that I might take my camera somewhere later today (Sunday), but in case I don't, Miss Amanda Lee has come to my rescue in very nice fashion. I took this picture of her one week ago. I hadn't thought I would be uploading any more images from that shoot, but I'm glad now that I went through my computer archives and gave this one a second look.

Amanda herself is a joy to me, not only because she is such a fine model, but also because she is one of the nicest people I know. I once told my dance instructor, Miss Angie, that I define success as developing one's natural gifts and talents along lines of excellence, and then using them to bless and enrich the lives of others. By that definition, Amanda, in my book, is a definite success, and I am privileged to count her in my circle of friends. Ever since childhood, I have had a well-developed sense of history, and Amanda is one of the few people I know who share that particular trait with me. Through her retro-style modeling, she is doing her part to help ensure that the rising generation will develop some sense of appreciation for the past, and for the contributions and sacrifices of the World War II generation in particular. Simply by doing what she does so well, she makes the past come alive. To Amanda, history is something real and tangible, not the dull abstraction to which, by now, a couple of entire generations have been exposed in America's public schools.

I would have found her appealing for that reason alone, but of course there is far more to her than that. I was surprised to learn from her mother that, until she took up swing dancing several years ago, Amanda was very quiet and painfully shy. She still retains a certain dignity and reserve about her, but by now she has become a celebrity of sorts; and while celebrity entails a public responsibility which not everyone can handle, she does so splendidly. At a public function a few months ago, I watched with great interest as a girl of perhaps 11 approached her with some questions, presumably about modeling. I was unable to hear a word that either of them said during their exchange, but during the few minutes they were together, Amanda treated that little girl as if she were the most important person in the world to her -- which perhaps she was at that moment. I won't be at all surprised if that brief encounter ends up having a significant impact on that child's life.

Amanda is a pleasure to look at, and an even greater one to know. She has blessed my own life by giving generously of her time and talent and posing for me on a number of occasions, thus helping me to learn the art of portraiture, which I have been trying to do from scratch. She is kind, thoughtful, gentle, soft-spoken, and patient. I myself am notoriously shy around people I don't know, but somehow Amanda was able to put me at ease the very first time I ever met her -- a fact which, in my view, speaks very well of her all by itself. I appreciate this young woman so much.

When Eleanor Roosevelt died in 1962, Adlai Stevenson, who at the time was the U. S. ambassador to the United Nations, said of her that "her glow warmed the world." The same could be said of Amanda, although her arena is obviously much smaller than Mrs. Roosevelt's. But she has most assuredly warmed my own world.

Thank you, Amanda, for being such a jewel, for being good to me, and for helping me in more ways than you probably realize. I hope your entire life is pure velvet. You are loved by so many people, including me.

Mel B Of Spice Girls Fame Signs On With Jenny Craig, by Eva Rinaldi

Mel B aka Melanie Brown has just been signed up as the new face of Jenny Craig (Australia and New Zealand).

Today at 10.30am Mel B, the top brass at Jenny Craig, and over a dozen news media enjoyed a healthy and delicious breakfast (and a media gig) at the Centennial Parklands function centre.

In the extremely unlikely event that you didn't know, Mel B is an English pop singer-songwriter, actress, author and television presenter. She is best known around the world as Scary Spice, one of the members of the girl group Spice Girls.

It's well know that brands around the world are often interested in signing up suitable celebrities to promote their wares, and on the surface it looks to be a great match with Jenny Craig being a leader in the weight loss industry for over 30 years, and Mel B recently off pregnancy, enjoying motherhood and looking to loose weight.

The international star told our table "I just love the breakfast. Jenny Craig is just right for me being a busy mum".

Mel B said on her eating "I was eating literally eating morning, noon and night, and its didn't matter what time. I was just eating. I was a house. I love my humps and bumps, but when a newspaper described my shape as the 'bootylicious, curvylicious, post-baby body of Melanie, I knew I had to do something. I had to get the eating under control".

Jenny Craig boss Amy Smith released in a media statement: "Mel told us she doesn't like dieting at all. She loves eating healthy foods and she is thrilled with the health snack options and the amount of fruit and vegetables she gets to eat. Jenny Craig's team of nutritionists and doctors have created a program especially for women like Mel who have recently given birth, that takes into consideration the nutrient levels needed for breastfeeding women", says Ms Smith.

Mel B said: "Life gets a bit crazy when you've got four daughters but it's important for us mums to live healthy and to be in good shape. Mums really need to take time for themselves and get to a place where they are happy with their body again. We should not put it off because we deserve more than that. I healthy happy mum equals a healthy happy family."

After breakfast Mel did some on site TV interviews, believed to be for Channel Seven, followed by a relaxed photo shoot in the lush green parklands. Apparently word must have spread around Sydney press circles, as after just minutes after going outside for the shoot a number of uninvited paparazzi showed up and started snapping away. Mel and her media team probably expected it, so its a good thing that the word is well and truly out about her new campaign with Jenny Craig.

Mel B looks great, so just imagine how hot she will look a few months into the Jenny Craig program. She acknowledge that media, the other former Spice Girls and everyone else will be watching her progress closely, and judging by today it appears UK pop queen is on set to achieve her diet goals. Will you achieve your dieting goals as summer sneaks up on you? Needless to say, you now know who to call, which we strongly suspect for the ideal in the first place.

20070302 Commercial/Espanol Hotel Model

The Espanol started as a Basque boarding house for sheepherders at 114 J Street. Ancil Hoffman bought it during the depression and turned it into a celebrity hangout. Ann Sothern and Max Baer frequented the place. In 1952, it moved into the Commercial Hotel at Third and I. An old photo in the restaurant shows that they rechristened it the Espanol Hotel. In 1959 the Luigi brothers bought it and gradually changed the food served from Basque to Italian. In 1965 it moved to its present location because of the construction of I-5 where the Commercial Hotel once stood.

Throughout our entire time in Moga at Gaurav's uncle's place, (and even throughout the rest of our trip in india), a lot of people working for them kept on coming up to Kevin and I and asking to take photos with us. When we told Gaurav and their family that people would always stop us to take photos with us no one really beleived us... Anyways, in Moga, a lot of the employees who cleaned or made the food would ask us to take photos with them... it didn't make much sense to me because they wanted us to take the photos with them with our camera - but we just smiled and went along. On our last night in Moga two of the girls came up to us and asked if we would go with them to take photos at a photography studio. Gaurav's dad thought it was us who wanted to take them, and was quite confused! It was quite interesting to be brought to a photo studio by the two girls, the youngest who giggled when she stood close to kevin, and take portrait like photos with them!! Another guy and his cousin and his baby showed up too and also took professional photos of us holding his baby or standing behind her! We felt like celebrities!

Logies 2011: Katy Perry Adds Firework To Night Of Surprises, by Eva Rinaldi

The Australian entertainment industries night of nights was certainly glamorous by Australian standards and delivered strongly in surprises and audience delight.

There were a ton of surprises and its safe to say that the organisers, including the Nine Network, got it right this year.

An emotional and gracious Karl Stefanovic, who won the Gold Logie, paid tribute to his wife Cass for "giving up a promising TV career of her own with the ABC to let me do this and look after our three beautiful kids."

The capacity crowd loved Karl's affectionate words for Network Nine boss David Gyngell -"He's probably at home, in his Homer Simpson undies, scratching himself or whatever he does, but mate, I love you as a boss and more importantly as a friend."

He also remembered his family saying he thanked his "mum for her beautiful soul" and his dad "for your male-pattern baldness, big guy."

The popular TV presenter - journalist disclosed that his mentor was Laurie Oakes: "The reason I am in this business and want to be for the rest of my life."

He had originally promised to stick to soda water, however he left stage with "I'm going to the bar."

Stefanovic threw into his entertaining speech that added he did not believe half of Australia would know who he was "if he wasn't pole-axed on Grey Goose vodka".

"I thought it was career-ending...but I survived it", he said.

"So yes I will probably have two dozen champagnes, a few vodkas and what not, but I will be right for the show in the morning."

On the success on the Today Show he shared: "We're risking things but we're both more confident...I've never been more confident in front of the camera, and I don't want that to sound arrogant, but that comes with the miles I've had on air."

A ton of actors, actresses and presenters made their way to the podium before Stefanovic at Melbourne's Crown Casino looking a bit bewildered as they grasped their viewer-SMS-voted Most Popular awards.

'Our Karl', the Channel 9 Today host and sometimes 60 Minutes reporter who ran away with the Gold Logie from Packed To The Rafters duo Rebecca Gibney and Jessica Marais, who I understand were hot favourites.

The popular awards had the room talking. Asher Keddie of Ten's Offspring, bested Seven's Packed To The Rafters dynamos Gibney and Marais as Most Popular Actress. Another surprise of the TV Week sponsored event was Chrissie Swan of Channel Ten's morning chat show The Circle. She was voted Most Popular New Female Talent...ahead of prime-time personalities Emma Booth, Julie Goodwin, Poh Ling Yeow and Hannah Marshall.

Ten's MasterChef, one of the highest-rating series in Australian television, was nominated for just one award - Most Popular Reality Program - which it won.

Stefanovic also won Most Popular Presenter ahead of Hamish Blake, Adam Hills, Shaun Micallef and Swan.

Underbelly: The Golden Mile's Firass Dirani won Most Popular New Talent, however his show was beaten by Packed To The Rafters as the viewers' favourite drama.

Channel Nine got more acholades with Underbelly being judged Most Outstanding Drama, while the Most Outstanding Actor and Actress went to Richard Roxburgh (Rake, ABC) and Claire van der Boom (Sisters Of War, ABC).

News media commentators, celebrities and the general public agreed that the strong line up of performing artists, headlined by Katy Perry, made this years Logies one of the best ever.

Logies 2011: Katy Perry Adds Firework To Night Of Surprises, by Eva Rinaldi

The Australian entertainment industries night of nights was certainly glamorous by Australian standards and delivered strongly in surprises and audience delight.

There were a ton of surprises and its safe to say that the organisers, including the Nine Network, got it right this year.

An emotional and gracious Karl Stefanovic, who won the Gold Logie, paid tribute to his wife Cass for "giving up a promising TV career of her own with the ABC to let me do this and look after our three beautiful kids."

The capacity crowd loved Karl's affectionate words for Network Nine boss David Gyngell -"He's probably at home, in his Homer Simpson undies, scratching himself or whatever he does, but mate, I love you as a boss and more importantly as a friend."

He also remembered his family saying he thanked his "mum for her beautiful soul" and his dad "for your male-pattern baldness, big guy."

The popular TV presenter - journalist disclosed that his mentor was Laurie Oakes: "The reason I am in this business and want to be for the rest of my life."

He had originally promised to stick to soda water, however he left stage with "I'm going to the bar."

Stefanovic threw into his entertaining speech that added he did not believe half of Australia would know who he was "if he wasn't pole-axed on Grey Goose vodka".

"I thought it was career-ending...but I survived it", he said.

"So yes I will probably have two dozen champagnes, a few vodkas and what not, but I will be right for the show in the morning."

On the success on the Today Show he shared: "We're risking things but we're both more confident...I've never been more confident in front of the camera, and I don't want that to sound arrogant, but that comes with the miles I've had on air."

A ton of actors, actresses and presenters made their way to the podium before Stefanovic at Melbourne's Crown Casino looking a bit bewildered as they grasped their viewer-SMS-voted Most Popular awards.

'Our Karl', the Channel 9 Today host and sometimes 60 Minutes reporter who ran away with the Gold Logie from Packed To The Rafters duo Rebecca Gibney and Jessica Marais, who I understand were hot favourites.

The popular awards had the room talking. Asher Keddie of Ten's Offspring, bested Seven's Packed To The Rafters dynamos Gibney and Marais as Most Popular Actress. Another surprise of the TV Week sponsored event was Chrissie Swan of Channel Ten's morning chat show The Circle. She was voted Most Popular New Female Talent...ahead of prime-time personalities Emma Booth, Julie Goodwin, Poh Ling Yeow and Hannah Marshall.

Ten's MasterChef, one of the highest-rating series in Australian television, was nominated for just one award - Most Popular Reality Program - which it won.

Stefanovic also won Most Popular Presenter ahead of Hamish Blake, Adam Hills, Shaun Micallef and Swan.

Underbelly: The Golden Mile's Firass Dirani won Most Popular New Talent, however his show was beaten by Packed To The Rafters as the viewers' favourite drama.

Channel Nine got more acholades with Underbelly being judged Most Outstanding Drama, while the Most Outstanding Actor and Actress went to Richard Roxburgh (Rake, ABC) and Claire van der Boom (Sisters Of War, ABC).

News media commentators, celebrities and the general public agreed that the strong line up of performing artists, headlined by Katy Perry, made this years Logies one of the best ever.

Stefanovic is Nine's first Gold Logie winner since Ray Martin won his fifth and final award in 1996. In voting him television's most popular personality, the public has ended a five-year stranglehold on gold for the Seven network.

Logies 2011: Katy Perry Adds Firework To Night Of Surprises, by Eva Rinaldi

The Australian entertainment industries night of nights was certainly glamorous by Australian standards and delivered strongly in surprises and audience delight.

There were a ton of surprises and its safe to say that the organisers, including the Nine Network, got it right this year.

An emotional and gracious Karl Stefanovic, who won the Gold Logie, paid tribute to his wife Cass for "giving up a promising TV career of her own with the ABC to let me do this and look after our three beautiful kids."

The capacity crowd loved Karl's affectionate words for Network Nine boss David Gyngell -"He's probably at home, in his Homer Simpson undies, scratching himself or whatever he does, but mate, I love you as a boss and more importantly as a friend."

He also remembered his family saying he thanked his "mum for her beautiful soul" and his dad "for your male-pattern baldness, big guy."

The popular TV presenter - journalist disclosed that his mentor was Laurie Oakes: "The reason I am in this business and want to be for the rest of my life."

He had originally promised to stick to soda water, however he left stage with "I'm going to the bar."

Stefanovic threw into his entertaining speech that added he did not believe half of Australia would know who he was "if he wasn't pole-axed on Grey Goose vodka".

"I thought it was career-ending...but I survived it", he said.

"So yes I will probably have two dozen champagnes, a few vodkas and what not, but I will be right for the show in the morning."

On the success on the Today Show he shared: "We're risking things but we're both more confident...I've never been more confident in front of the camera, and I don't want that to sound arrogant, but that comes with the miles I've had on air."

A ton of actors, actresses and presenters made their way to the podium before Stefanovic at Melbourne's Crown Casino looking a bit bewildered as they grasped their viewer-SMS-voted Most Popular awards.

'Our Karl', the Channel 9 Today host and sometimes 60 Minutes reporter who ran away with the Gold Logie from Packed To The Rafters duo Rebecca Gibney and Jessica Marais, who I understand were hot favourites.

The popular awards had the room talking. Asher Keddie of Ten's Offspring, bested Seven's Packed To The Rafters dynamos Gibney and Marais as Most Popular Actress. Another surprise of the TV Week sponsored event was Chrissie Swan of Channel Ten's morning chat show The Circle. She was voted Most Popular New Female Talent...ahead of prime-time personalities Emma Booth, Julie Goodwin, Poh Ling Yeow and Hannah Marshall.

Ten's MasterChef, one of the highest-rating series in Australian television, was nominated for just one award - Most Popular Reality Program - which it won.

Stefanovic also won Most Popular Presenter ahead of Hamish Blake, Adam Hills, Shaun Micallef and Swan.

Underbelly: The Golden Mile's Firass Dirani won Most Popular New Talent, however his show was beaten by Packed To The Rafters as the viewers' favourite drama.

Channel Nine got more acholades with Underbelly being judged Most Outstanding Drama, while the Most Outstanding Actor and Actress went to Richard Roxburgh (Rake, ABC) and Claire van der Boom (Sisters Of War, ABC).

News media commentators, celebrities and the general public agreed that the strong line up of performing artists, headlined by Katy Perry, made this years Logies one of the best ever.
